Any information about the Dragon Quest universe is introduced the moment it becomes necessary to the plot, including robots, fairies and time travel, making it all feel unearned. Many characters are glossed over and underdeveloped - most notably, Luca's childhood friend Bianca and Princess Nera. The pacing improves somewhat once Luca and Harry are captured by Nimzo, but the film never stops feeling like a 20-hour game compressed to less than two hours. The film covers the story beats of Dragon Quest V, but it never really captures the emotions of the game. The film spans decades, compressing years and years of narrative into way too short a time to properly flesh out any of the plot. The fact directors Takashi Yamazak, Ryuichi Yagi and Makoto Hanafusa even attempted it, much less succeeded as well as they did, is remarkable in and of itself.

The film lovingly orchestrates Koichi Sugiyama's iconic soundtrack, which heightens the epic quality and emotional intensity of every scene. The soundtrack and animation elevate the film far above the writing, which can often be clunky.ĭragon Quest V is a game that's so full of plot and characters and world-building that it's all but impossible to compress it into a 100 minute movie. The only flaw in the animation is that, because the mouth movements were created for the Japanese dialogue, the English dub does not match up to the animation - and it's obvious. You feel like you're transported to another world - or, at least, the visuals transport you to another world. On top of that, the action sequences are breathtaking and epic. The film doesn't recycle Akira Toriyama's iconic character designs, but recreates them based on its own aesthetic. The characters are adorable, and most of the emotion in the film is carried by the characters' expressions and reactions to events rather than the writing. CGI in anime can be iffy, but thankfully, it works well here. The fights are spectacular and awe-inspiring. The film's animation is beautiful, fluid and constantly in motion, and the characters look fantastic. Along the way, he's joined by a mohawked sabretooth cat, a lovable slime being and a childhood friend.
